Johnson County: Building Communities of Hope
Casey Family Programs
In 2012 Johnson County community members came to the table with representatives of Casey Family Programs to discuss how they could support vulnerable families and decrease the number of children entering foster care. The community struggled with chronic problems of unemployment, substance abuse and extreme poverty.
Business, government, nonprofit, volunteers and community partners all came together to generate a vision and create a plan for improving the lives of vulnerable kids and families. Johnson County Community of Hope built a community based set of services, generating new job opportunities, building a women's drug dependency treatment facility, and working closely with the school board to improve the lives of its children.
In the four years since its inception, foster care numbers in Johnson County have decreased dramatically; community members are looking past county lines at expanding the program and opening doors for new partnerships.
